CGPA to Percentage Conversion Formulas

🏫
CBSE Board (10-Point Scale)
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
This is the official CBSE formula. A CGPA of 9.0 gives 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%. Used for Class 10 and Class 12 results.
🎓
University / College (10-Point Scale)
Percentage = CGPA × 10
Many universities (VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University etc.) use a simple ×10 multiplier. A CGPA of 8.5 gives 85%.
🌐
4-Point GPA Scale (US / International)
Percentage = (GPA / 4) × 100
Used by international universities and some Indian institutions. A GPA of 3.6 gives (3.6 / 4) × 100 = 90%.
💡
Not sure which formula to use? Check your marksheet or university handbook. CBSE Class 10 always uses ×9.5. For college, check if your institution specifies a different multiplier.

Explained

What is CGPA and How is it Calculated?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a standardised way of expressing academic performance across subjects, replacing raw marks with grade points on a defined scale (usually 10 or 4).

In the CBSE system, each subject is assigned a Grade Point (GP) between 1 and 10 based on the marks scored. The CGPA is the average of the Grade Points across the best five subjects. For example, if your Grade Points are 9, 8, 9, 7, and 8, your CGPA = (9+8+9+7+8) ÷ 5 = 8.2.

To convert this CBSE CGPA to a percentage: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. This percentage is widely accepted by colleges and universities for admission cut-offs.

Common Questions

CGPA to Percentage — FAQs

Is 9.8 CGPA good in CBSE?
Yes, 9.8 CGPA in CBSE equals 9.8 × 9.5 = 93.1% — an excellent result. Students scoring 9.5+ CGPA earn the A1 grade and easily meet the cut-offs for top science, commerce, and arts colleges.
Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5 and not 10?
CBSE uses 9.5 because the A1 grade band spans 91–100 marks. Multiplying by 9.5 gives approximately the midpoint of that band. This makes the conversion proportionally fair across all grade bands from D to A1.
Do all universities accept CGPA × 9.5?
No. The ×9.5 formula is specific to CBSE Class 10 and 12. Most engineering and degree universities use ×10. Always check your target institution's official formula before filling admission or job application forms.
What is a good CGPA in college?
On a 10-point scale: 8.5+ is outstanding, 7.5–8.4 is very good, 6.5–7.4 is good, and below 6.5 may limit placement options. Most top companies require 6.5+ CGPA (equivalent to ~65%) for campus interviews.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA in CBSE?
Divide your percentage by 9.5 to get the CBSE CGPA. For example, if you scored 76%, your CGPA = 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0. Use the Percentage to CGPA calculator above to do this instantly.
Can CGPA exceed 10?
No. On a 10-point scale, the maximum CGPA is 10.0 (all A1 grades, all 10 grade points). On a 4-point GPA scale, the maximum is 4.0. A calculated value above these indicates an input error.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the running average across all completed semesters, giving a holistic view of your academic performance over time.
Is 7.5 CGPA enough for placements?
7.5 CGPA (≈ 75%) is generally sufficient for most campus placements. Top product companies (Google, Microsoft, etc.) may require 8.0+. Many PSU and government job applications require 60% (≈ 6.3 CGPA on a 10-point scale) as the minimum criterion.
