Air always flows from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure to equalize the pressure difference. The greater this pressure difference (the pressure gradient) and the shorter the distance over which it occurs, the faster the air will accelerate. This rapid movement of air, driven by the pressure gradient, is what we experience as strong winds. The larger the pressure difference, the stronger the wind.
