Metals:

  • Metals are elements that are usually hard, shiny, and strong.
  • They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Most metals are solid at room temperature (except mercury, which is a liquid).
  • They have high melting and boiling points.
  • Metals are malleable (can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires).
  • In chemical reactions, metals lose electrons and form positive ions.
  • Examples of metals: Iron, Copper, Aluminium, Gold, Silver.

Non-metals:

  • Non-metals are elements that are usually dull and brittle.
  • They are poor conductors of heat and electricity (except graphite).
  • Non-metals can be solids, liquids, or gases at room temperature.
  • They have low melting and boiling points (except diamond, a form of carbon).
  • Non-metals are not malleable or ductile.
  • In chemical reactions, non-metals gain or share electrons and form negative ions.
  • Examples of non-metals: Oxygen, Carbon, Sulphur, Nitrogen, Chlorine.
