What is meant by a substance?
A substance is a type of matter that has a uniform and definite composition. This means it is made up of only one kind of particle throughout. Substances can be either:
- Elements – Made of only one type of atom (e.g., oxygen, copper).
- Compounds – Made of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio (e.g., water, carbon dioxide).
Substances have consistent properties such as boiling point, melting point, and density. Unlike mixtures, their composition does not vary from sample to sample.
