How will you separate a mixture containing kerosene and petrol (difference in their boiling points is more than 25°C), which are miscible with each other?
To separate a mixture of kerosene and petrol, which are miscible liquids and have a boiling point difference of more than 25°C, we use the method of simple distillation.
Process of Simple Distillation:
- The mixture is heated.
- Petrol, which has a lower boiling point, boils and vaporizes first.
- The vapors are passed through a condenser, where they cool and turn into liquid.
- The condensed petrol is collected in a separate container.
- Kerosene, with a higher boiling point, remains in the flask and can be collected later.
Hence petrol and kerosene are successfully separated based on their different boiling points.
